Just an Offseason Update - Tuesday, December 04, 2007

Although it seems like it was just a few Fridays ago that we were all sweating out the work day waiting to pack your racing bags and head to the track, the racing season is just around the corner.

This is the hardest time of the year for race teams.  Everyone at Greg Martin Motorsports is hard at work putting together sponsorship proposals and packages to try and get the #4 machine back on the track for next season.

This year hopes to be more successful year for us.  We hope to bring more wins to you the fans and sponsors then we did last year.  We made it through some bad midyear luck to end up ninth in points.  All in all landing in the ten in points a notching our first career sportsman modified win was fantastic.

I want to make sure and thank you all for the most popular driver award I received in 2007.  That award could have never been possible without all of you.  I was truly honored to win that and thank you all again.  Hope you’re all looking forward to the upcoming racing season as much as we are.  See you in April.

High Line Leads to 3rd Place Finish - Tuesday, August 14, 2007

Ransomville Speedway - Greg Martin raced his Jeffery Machine DIRT Sportsman around the high line to his second best finish of the year in a makeup race for the Ransomville Speedway Summer Nationals.

Martin started the Tuesday night race off by finishing 2nd to the 0 car of Jipp Ortiz in the heat race.

He qualified 3rd for a feature race that started a total of twenty-four cars.  The feature had many cautions helping some of the drivers move from the back of the pack up to the front.  Greg decided to run the top line for the first time all year.  The decision to run that line really paid off.

Martin spent the first ten laps of the feature passing the 11 of Bob Broomfield and 28w of Sandy Pembleton.  Laps eleven thru twenty (of twenty-five) were spent in a hard fought battle battling the 777 of Tyler McPherson with Greg leading most of the ten laps.  With five laps to go Martin had one bad corner allowing McPherson and the eventual winner 5 of Don Spatorico to pass him.  Martin finished the race strong racing with the 23 of Ed Cain and prevailing to a 3rd place finish.

Overall Martin ran a great race and he and the Greg Martin Motorsports team look forward to the upcoming race this Friday.  Martin would like to thank his sponsors, crewmen, and family for their continued support in the 2007 race season.

Results:  Don Spatorico, Tyler MacPherson, Greg Martin, Ed Cain, Larry Wight, Scott Just, Luke Carelton, Justin Wright, John Smith, Tony Purgarich, John Panattoni, Rick Ballente, Jessy Cotriss, Jeff Cosgrove, Bob Broomfield, Jim Zimmerman, Zach Zempe, Mark Williams, Dennis Ginacola, Sandy Pembleton, Steve Miller, Tommy Flannigan, Peter Gordon, and Steve Schumacher. Friday Night Flat - Friday, August 10, 2007

Martin started 8th out of ten (via a draw) cars in the heat race, with four cars qualifying for the feature.  With the track still being worked in cars that started past the third row found it very hard to qualify by way of the heat.  Martin raced the wheels of the Jeffery Machine DIRTcar Sportsman to finish 6th in the heat.

Martin started 3rd of ten cars in the consolation race, with four cars qualifying qualifying for the feature.  Martin drove his car into third place within the first few laps.  Half way through the race still in 3rd, Martin's Sportsman suffered a right front flat from contact with the 42 car taking Martin out of the consolation race and into the stands for the rest of the night.

The Greg Martin Motorsports team will be racing Tuesday, August 14th in the makeup race for the Ransomville Speedway Summer Nationals.

Martin Looks Forward to Upcoming Races - Friday, August 03, 2007

Racing With John Panattoni at Ransomville SpeedwayGreg Martin Motorsports is very excited to announce the addition of Towner Orchards as a 2007 sponsor.

The BuffaloAtHome.com #4 of Greg Martin was hooked up this last Friday.

Martin started his heat in 3rd position, and he did not have a great start dropping back into 4th by turn number one. Martin passed the Dennis Giancola 13 and John Panattoni 67 cars to cruse to a 2nd place finish behind Bob Broomfield 11 in the heat.

Martin started the DIRT Sportsman feature in 7th position, and in the first lap, he passed the John Smith 18. A caution came out and Martin restarted in 6th position. He passed the Mike Sport 5s car on the restart and within the next few laps Martin battled with Bob Broomfield 11 for the 4th position nearly being collected in the wreck of Dennis Giancola 13. On lap five Martin restarted in 3rd and Greg also restarted in 3rd place on lap six after another caution. Lap seven of the feature was a very expensive lap. Coming out of turn four the 28w of Sandy Pembleton spun out collecting Martin (who was currently in 4th place) and at least seven other drivers. This turned out to be the last lap of the night for the Greg Martin Motorsports team and many of the other teams that were involved in the wreck. After the race Martin commented “I think we had a car to run with Don (Spatarico) Friday night, but we were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. It was just one of those racing deals. Hopefully we can get the car back to the same caliber for Tuesday.”

Martin extends his many thanks to his pit crew and the help of others for helping the team get the front end of the car back together after the race in the pits.

Greg Martin and his team look forward to this Tuesday (August 7, 2007) for the Modified Summer Nationals where the Sportsman division will be racing a regular race at Ransomville Speedway. Friday (August 10, 2007), Greg will be racing in the Lucas Oil Sportsman Nationals 50 lap race at Ransomville Speedway.

Results: Don Spatorico, Steve Miller, Scott Just, Steve Schumacher, John Panattoni, Jessy Cotriss, Tony Purgarich, Jeff Cosgrove, Bob Broomfield, Derek Smith, Sandy Pembleton, Jipp Ortiz, Peter Gordon, Nick Joy, John Smith, Jim Zimmerman, Greg Martin, Tommy Flannigan, Ed Cain, Mark Potter, Mark Williams, Dennis Giancola, and Mike Short. Heat Winners – John Smith, Jipp Ortiz, and Bob Broomfield.

Check out our Racing Videos Page to view the crash. The video should be up sometime this week.

Greg Martin Motorsports would like to welcome Tower Orchards on board as a 2007 sponsor.

Ransomville Speedway -  Greg Martin's Jeffery Machine DIRT Sportsman was in the top 3 on Friday working his way to what could have been another great finish when he was accidentally hit in turn number 4.  Martin's experience and skills helped him save the car from bombarding into the turn 4 rail.  Martin's pit crew men John Jacobs and Eric did a great job replacing a broken shock to get the car back on the track mid race allowing the Greg Martin Motorsports team to still pick up points despite the accident. These points kept the team in 9th place of 43 total cars in Ransomville Speedway's Original Pizza Logs Sportsman Division.  Greg Martin Motorsports and fans look forward to a fresh week in this coming Friday's race.

Ransomville, NY – Greg Martin had another great week of dirt track racing when he finished 6th in the Ransomville Speedway’s Original Pizza Logs Sportsman feature.  Martin’s Garlow Road Trading Post #4 finished 3rd in the heat race which qualified him for a 5th place start in the feature race.  In the first 20 laps Greg battled to eventually take the lead of the 23 car field.  On lap 22 of the 25 lap race something seemed to go wrong with the Greg Martin Motorsports sportsman sending him into survival mode for the last 2 laps of the race to finish in 6th place.  Greg dropped from 1st to 6th in the final laps of the race.  Despite the car problems Martin still finished with a top 10 to help the team sustain 9th place in the points race and slightly close the gap between 8th and 9th in the points.  The Greg Martin Motorsports team will be investigating the late race problems for next week’s race.  Martin fans please fill out the Ransomville Speedway 2007 Most Popular Driver ballot within the weekly Ransomville Laps official program.

Greg Martin Is in the Fast Lane at Ransomville Speedway - By Amy Frontuto - Friday, June 29, 2007
Greg Martin Qualifying at Randsomville SpeedwayAt six-years-old, Youngstown’s Greg Martin wasn’t just learning how to read and write. He was learning how to drive. “My dad and I had gone to the races all of my life,” says Martin, now 25. “We just decided to get into it.”

In his first competition, he sat behind the wheel of a go-kart at Ransomville Speedway, winning both the qualifying heats and the feature. He went on to win two national championships in Syracuse and later graduated to his current car at Ransomville Speedway, the #4 DIRT Sportsman.

Presently he races weekly at the Speedway and is accompanied by his dad and sister, who assist him in the pits. “My mom is supportive, but she’s too nervous to go,” he says.

His friend Jon Jacobs attends every race in his position as crew chief, while David Hockenberry serves as webmaster of Martin’s official website, www.gregmartinmotorsports.com, and helps to keep the Sportsman in top shape.

They work on the car for an average of 45 hours per week, not including race night. “We have to go through the car and make sure everything is straight. We have to grease everything. We spend a lot of time on the geometry of the car.”

On May 25, 2007, Martin won his first feature in the Original Pizza Logs Sportsman division, after finishing in 1st place in the preceding heat and earning a 4th place start in the feature.

While Martin says that his superior engine program, built by K.S. Machine Shop in Tonawanda, gives him an advantage, Hockenberry points out that Martin has also grown as a driver. “Greg has really come along with his patience this year. He has learned when to turn on the afterburners and when to wait.”

Martin’s sponsors play an equally crucial role, providing some of the funds needed to buy new parts and keep the Sportsman at its fastest. In return, each sponsor receives their name on the car, is mentioned at interviews, and has premium placement on Martin’s website, which averages over 1,200 users per month.
BuffaloAtHome.com, produced by VertaSource, LLC, is one of Martin’s newest sponsors. “Greg Martin was an easy choice for sponsorship by BuffaloAtHome.com,” says Chief Technology Officer Jason Isla. “He embodies the true spirit of Western New Yorkers. He’s passionate about his hometown, his friends and family, and he constantly challenges himself.”

Hockenberry agrees. “He’s so competitive and he wants to win so badly. He’s willing to sacrifice a lot for racing.”

When Martin isn’t on the track, he is a full-time student who plans to transfer to the University at Buffalo to study pre-law. He also works as a machinist at Jeffrey Machine and as a bartender at Race Tavern. His employers, season sponsors, give him flexible hours so that he can continue to race.

In the near future, Martin hopes to win a track championship. He ranks 10th (out of 36) and has a total of 218 points as of June 22, 2007.

He says, “We’re just putting everything out there and trying to stay consistent. I think we have a car that’s capable of getting in the top five every week.”

greg_martin_ransomville_speedway.jpg

Greg Martin’s BuffaloAtHome.com DIRT Sportsman had another great run of dirt track racing this week.  Finessing his way to the front, martin drove to a second place finish in his heat.  The Original Pizza Logs Sportsman Division showed to be very competitive this week, with all of the cars showing fast lap times.  Martin started 9th in the feature, but fell back four positions on a bad restart.  Martin drove hard and smart to regain the positions.  Although his tires were running hot, Martin managed to work his way through the field.  The #4 finished in 8th place and picked up his second top ten of the season.  Martin fans are so excited to see Greg driving through the fog of bad luck and into the top ten in points.  Stop By Greg’s pit this week to pick up an Autographed post card.

Greg Martin Wins the Sportsman Division Feature at Ransomville - Friday, May 25, 2007

Coming Off Cornter Number Four In The Pits After Winnig The Feature

Greg Martin drove his heart out in his Jeffery Machine DIRT Sportsman to take the checkered flag for his first Ransomville Speedway Original Pizza Logs Sportsman Division win of 2007!  It was an eventful night in the DIRT Sportsman Division and Martin preserved through it all.  The Greg Martin Motorsports team showed their skills when they rebuilt the #4 car after an unfortunate break last week.  Long hours and dedication payed off when the #4 was the fastest car on the track.  Martin finished 1st in the heat which qualified him for a 4th place start in the feature.  Caution flags waved almost every other lap throughout this week’s feature, which displayed Martins ability to master the restart.  Martin made exciting passes for both the third and first place spots.  Greg Martin fans were on their feet for an awesome first place finish!  For all of you fans who were waiting to celebrate in victory lane with Martin and crew, Ransomville Speedway personally apologizes.  Due to time constraints Martin will be in victory lane next week before the races begin.  Congratulations Greg!

Better Luck Next Week - Friday, May 18, 2007

DIRT Sportsman_Sportsman Greg Martin Crossing Finish Line.JPG

For the third week in a row bad luck seemed to loom over the Greg Martin Motorsports team.  The Ray’s Tavern #4 of Greg Martin displayed his driving talents and a great setup when he took the checkered flag in the third heat of the Origonal Pizza Logs Sportsman Division.  Taking the momentum from the heat, Martin started fifth in the feature.  He began to pull away from the pack to make the pass for the fourth position. While working for third, Martin was taken out when the car in front of him slid up the track and started to spin.  This collision sent Greg to the back of the pack and caused the #4 car to break.  This break ultimately caused his to slide into the wall.  This unfortunate race caused Martin to a second DNF (did not finish) of the season.  Martin fans are still holding on and believing in the talent that they know his possesses looking forward to next week’s race at Ransomville Speedway (The big "R").

Start Your Engines! - Friday, May 04, 2007
Martin started strong on Friday night.  After a great qualifying run last week Martin was able to finish second in his heat because of his great setup.  When the exciting sportsman feature began, the dirt started flying.  Martin started strong but the field was yielded to a caution after a lap of racing.  On lap 2, Martin was involved in a collision on the restart.  Sudden breaking from cars in the front of the pack caused a chain reaction.  Luck was not on Martin’s side when #23 accidentally drove his car in the back of Martin entangling their tires.  This frustrating accident sent Martin to the pits and brought out the 2nd caution flag.  Martin was sent to the back of the pack for being involved in an accident that brought out a caution flag.  Martin displayed his professional driving skills by throwing it in every corner and finishing in 12th place out of a 25-car field.  Martin fans are looking forward to next week and some better luck on the dirt track for Martin's #4 DIRT Sportsman.
